The fact that so many children in society today are obese is something we have to work on. Children that are overweight often get ridiculed and they have a low self esteem However, the serious health concerns for them is the greatest thing that is a concern. Their heart has to work very hard due to the extra weight.
Many children that are overweight have a sedentary lifestyle. They sit around all day long playing video games, watching TV, being on the computer, and doing other activities. They need to get their bodies moving. Parents have to get them outdoors riding bikes, going for walks, and playing so that they are burning calories. Plan a scavenger hunt or a day at the park so that they are free to run around and have a great time.
Parents should get out there too. Plan some family outings that include everyone having a good time while moving. This can be camping, hiking, swimming, jumping on trampoline, and more. There are plenty of indoor events too during the colder time of year too. This includes rock climbing and indoor mazes. Even walking around the mall for the day when it is cold is fun, and it is exercise.
Offering children food that is nutritious for them is very important. Fast food is high in trans fats, sugar, salt, and other elements that children really don’t need. These meals are also very high in calories. Many children are getting twice as many calories per day as they need!
Parents have to set good examples when it comes to what their children eat. Allowing children to help with the shopping and to prepare meals is a good start. Children are more likely to eat what they have helped create. In fact, they can even have a small garden where they tend to fruits and vegetables that the family will eat.
Parents that have concerns about their child’s weight should talk to their doctor. It can be very hard for parents to tell their children no when they want sweets or a second plate of food. A dietician can also help with getting such a problem under control. Parents need to make sure they can openly communicate with their child’s doctor.
Regular checkups are important to ensure that the overall health of a child is what it should be. Don’t wait until your child is sick or you feel there is a serious problem before you take action. Children that are overweight and continue to eat a poor diet could develop Juvenile Diabetes.
If things don’t change, we are going to continue to have too many unhealthy children out there. Weight is just one of the many concerns. Adults smoking around children is also not good for their health. It can harm their lungs and it can lead to serious breathing problems including asthma. Adults need to think about how their actions affect the children around them. They also need to think about the impression that they want to make on those youngsters.
